Newsflash: More Children Rescued in Haiti

Orphans Project

For over 10 years, Africa’s Children’s Fund has been a beacon and source of hope for thousands of children. It is our desire to expand our reach and touch more lives through our Orphans Program.

The  purpose of the Orphans Program is to provide financial services and other supportive services to Orphans and vulnerable children to enable them to acquire functional education for a better, more productive future.

Africa’s Children’s Fund believes that the key to rising above the poverty that so many Africans face is to teach the people tools and skills for the future. Only through education can one truly become self-sufficient and productive in society.

With  your help and support, we will raise funds to sponsor this program through your donations to the Harmony Children's Center, the Sponsor -A-Child project and  A Dollar Makes A Difference campaign.

Harmony Children's Center

The purpose of the Harmony Children’s Center is to improve the quality of life of children who have lost one or both parents to HIV/AIDS by providing them with housing , education, medical and nutritional assistance so that they may live a healthy and productive  life.

THE FACTS

Literacy Rates 99% 68%
Net enrollment in primary school* 92% 60%
Total school life expectancy (yrs) 15.8% 8.8%

In 2006, 2.9 million people died from AIDS, leaving behind almost 1 million orphans**.  Currently, there is an estimated 7 million*** orphans living in Nigeria. These numbers will increase dramatically in the next 10-20 years.

*The average Nigerian only completes  the equivalent of 7th grade, leaving  them about ½ as educated as Americans

**Statistics from UNAIDS/WHO 2006 Report on the Global AIDS epidemic

***Statistics from UNICEF

The Harmony Children’s Center will be built near the site of Nko Orphanage that was destroyed during the Nigerian war and has never been rebuilt. The center will include ten residential buildings for one hundred orphans, a vocational school for skill training, a clinic for primary care and AIDS treatment, a farm, a library, and a recreational facility. By placing sufficient attention to every child, with no more than 10 children in each  dwelling, there is room for love and care.

Sponsor-A-Child

EVERY CHILD MATTERS! That's the underlying principle of the work accomplished by Africa's Children's Fund. But we would be unable to put principle into action without the help of concerned sponsors like you. It's your time and generosity that get things done.

In 2003, 2.2 million people died from AIDS. So far, the AIDS epidemic has left behind an estimated 15 million orphans. Around 80% of these AIDS orphans live in sub-Saharan Africa. At the end of 2003 there were an estimated 1.8 million orphans living in Nigeria. These numbers will increase as the epidemic develops. It has been estimated that the number of children orphaned by AIDS will rise dramatically in the next 10-20 years. AIDS in Africa has orphaned more children than anywhere in the world.

As the number of adults dying of AIDS rises over the next decade, an increasing number of orphans will grow up without parental care and love and will be deprived of their basic rights to shelter, food, health and education. Keeping orphans in school is crucial for their future. By providing education, this can work as a safety net in the child's life. Schooling can also help to break the cycle of poverty. Therefore, it is important that great efforts are made to keep orphaned children in school.

This is where you come in. For less than one dollar a day ($30 monthly, $360 annually), you too can support a child in his or her quest for education. This monthly pledge will help a child go to school, receive necessary medical treatment, and be a part of activities that will give him/her an opportunity to have a future. You will be sent a photo and bio about the child you are sponsoring. As a sponsor you will be able to communicate with the child through our organization. The length of the sponsorship is yearly, but maybe discontinued at the donor's request at any time. (If possible we ask that a 30-day notice be given before ending sponsorship).

Please help make a difference in a child's life by making a pledge. Download the pledge form here (PDF).

And you can rest assured, knowing that 100% of your donations go directly to your sponsored child.

A Dollar Makes A Difference

A Dollar Makes A Difference Program allows individuals and organizations to sponsor  African children who are at-risk of discontinuing their education. 20% of children attend classes beyond primary school, leaving many people unable to learn the skills they need to break out of the cycle of poverty that surrounds them.

Many families are unable to afford the luxury of sending their children to school—but as little as $1 can change that. The premise of the “A Dollar Makes a Difference” campaign is simple: every person donates $1, and every one of those dollars means another day of classes for an African child.

The purpose of the Dollar Makes A Difference program is to build a learning environment and create a connection between children living in America and Africa, whereby the donation of a dollar, both the child giving and the one receiving are able to benefit from mutual learning and personal growth.

Only 28% of all the students attending their first year of primary school ever graduate from the 6th grade. UNESCO calculates that over one third of the population of children age 6-11 do not attend classes and the numbers continue to drop as the children age.

The Dollar Makes A Difference campaign can also be used as an educational tool in elementary school settings. It is beneficial to instill in the American youth the idea of  giving.  With this program, we will encourage students to raise funds to support a child of their same age who resides in Africa.

By encouraging the idea that any amount given helps those in need, we are able to create a healthy outlook that hopefully will carry on through out their lives.

A Dollar really can Make A Difference!!!
